Separation - Video

I made a video of myself separating my hair. The video is only 5 minutes long. I didn't write a script for it or anything, so I'm not sure if it's clear what I'm doing. I didn't explain in the video, but to remind everyone, I started locking by just washing my hair. I separate to somewhat control the size of my locks. Anyway, this should give those who might not know a feeling of how one person separates their hair.

You must have just added this cuz I just looked at your blog for new stuff and it wasn't there. Anyway. I'm glad you did that cuz now I can see that you really have a lot of your hair that is locked at the bottom. It's hard to tell in the pics. I can tell that it's easy to separate cuz you did that in less than 5 minutes. I can tell you what I do differently from you and it may or may not help but here goes. You see how you separate from the bottom and then just let it go and there was little pieces in between? I would separate all the way to the root so that the little pieces that weren't connected would at least be very very close to the dread. Now the dreads in the back need absolutely no separating. They stay put. The ones in the front need some slightly cuz they do try their hand at merging. You know my hair was short when I started sorta so you can try separating the shorter parts of your hair anyway to kinda help then along. Can't hurt a bit. Your hair is nice Angela and I can't wait to see them creep up some more towards the scalp.

hey I needed to leave you a comment because I've been reading your lock blog since January when I had my braidlocks. I took them down & had my loose hair for a while but my hair was damaged from blowdrying so about a week ago I did another BC and today I just started another set of locks.. this is actualy my THIRD set. Anyway, I just wanted to send you a message and say hey! My blog is private however I'm going to set it so that if you'd like you can read it & I'll have a mixture of videos & posts.. but I love following your journey, it's good to know I'm not the only one out there that's tried more than once to lock their hair! Peace Angela!

Yeah, I think my hair looks so different in person than it looks in pics. It looks more locked in person.

Yeah, it's not hard to separate, I think you pinpointed one of my concerns, though. Those hairs in between locks. I think I should be more conscientious about separating all the way to the roots of my hair. I will try what you do, because sometimes I do feel that right after I separate my hair, those loose hairs still go crazy (can't really explain it better than that).

So your locks in the back, you don't really separate? Wow, that's so cool, it happened so fast. So I guess it's true that the more locked your hair gets, the less you have to separate.

Thanks for the compliment on my hair! We're going to be at 6 months!

@ Tashi

Thanks for reading my blog, and for leaving me a comment! I know that my blog really focuses on me and what I'm thinking about the whole locking process, so I'm not always sure it's of interest to anyone else.

We can do it this time. :-)

Yeah those hairs in between still exist a bit in mine. Not a lot but for example I have a few that's between certain dreads that just don't have a place to go because the others are already locked. I have these two in particular that are sooo tiny but they already locked on the end. So they won't stay at a nearby dread. I threaded one in between a dread but I still have that little tiny bud at the end. The others are a tad bit thicker so I think they will be the size of your dreads. I have accepted the fact that I will have about 5 that are tiny in comparison to the rest of the head. Yes, it's crazy. The back of my head is a complete different texture and I swore up and down they would be the last to do something but in fact, they took no time. It's so nice to not have to do ANY separation what so ever back there. Now if only the front would cooperate. Some have merged with so many hairs that all I can do is separate as far as they would let me without ripping the hairs or cutting them. I just can't bring myself to cut the merging hairs so I guess I will have to live with it. It's not that bad though. 6 months here we come! Oh and I only tend to separate when 90% dry. The sounds scares me when I do it wet. They seem to pop easier and I rather do it dry.

I really like your videos Angela, definitely keep making them.

I also wanted to mention that I can see a big difference from your first video and I like how your hair is coming along. In fact when I commented on your Jamaica post, I didn't even realize at first that you were the same person from your first video because your hair looked so different.

Glad you like my videos so far. I don't talk a lot in real life, nor do I like cameras, but surprisingly like doing the videos. The only thing is, I don't think I have that much to talk about to make more videos, but we'll see.

Also glad you can see the difference between then and now. I also should say that my hair was wet in some of those Jamaica pictures, and that changes the appearance of my hair as well.

That's funny. You have some locks that are much smaller in comparison, and I have about 5 or so locks that already I can tell are going to be bigger than the rest. How much bigger, I can't really say. I can tell because the base of those few are larger than the others. I haven't taken pictures of it because I don't think I can really show that with pics. But anyway, I guess that's the way with freeforming. Even with cultivated locking, sometimes the hair does things you don't expect.

Also, I do separate when my hair is wet because I've been told that's better, but I do like to separate better when the hair is dry. It seems easier for me somehow.

Greetings!~

You know what would be "really cool", if you took a picture, once a month, for the next 4 years, and put all the pics togeter on a video, that would be cool to see your locks of now to 4 yrs. from now all within a 5 to ten minute video... I got the idea from a guy who took a picture of himself everyday for a whole year, and I think it is still on YouTube somewhere....

Take Care~
